Powerball Jackpot Finally Cracked After Record-Breaking 40-Draw Streak
Record-Shattering Jackpot Draws to a Close
After 40 consecutive drawings without a winner, the Powerball jackpot has finally been claimed, marking the end of an unprecedented dry spell. The winning ticket for the record-breaking $109 billion jackpot was sold on Wednesday, April 3.
Lucky Ticket Holder Emerges
The lucky winner, who has not yet been identified, has the option to receive the full jackpot amount in 29 annual installments or take a lump sum payment of $59.5 billion. The lump sum payment would be subject to federal and state taxes, which could significantly reduce the take-home winnings.
The Powerball jackpot had been steadily climbing since August 2023, when a single ticket matched all six winning numbers. Since then, no player had managed to replicate the feat, leaving the jackpot to grow to astronomical proportions.
The winning numbers for the historic drawing were 10, 33, 41, 47, and 56, with the Powerball number being 10. The jackpot was the largest in Powerball history and the second-largest in U.S. lottery history, surpassed only by the $1.58 billion Mega Millions jackpot won in 2018.
The Powerball game is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The odds of winning the jackpot are approximately 1 in 292.2 million.
