French Surfer Makes History

Defay Punches Her Way to a Podium Finish

Johanne Defay of France has made history by winning the bronze medal in surfing at the Tokyo Olympics. She is the first French surfer to ever medal in the sport at the Olympics.

Defay put in a strong performance in her bronze medal heat, scoring a 7.67 and a 6.10 on her two best waves. She was able to hold off the challenge of American Caroline Marks, who finished with a 6.83 and a 5.97.

The bronze medal is a fitting reward for Defay, who has been one of the most consistent surfers on the World Championship Tour in recent years. She has won two WCT events this year and has finished in the top five in the overall standings for the past three years.

Defay's victory is a major moment for surfing in France. It is the first time that a French surfer has ever won a medal at the Olympics, and it is sure to inspire a new generation of surfers.
